Unveiling the versatility of SUV travel experience

SUV or Sedan? Choosing the Right Black Car for Your Trip

The right vehicle comes down to two numbers, passengers and bags, and then the occasion. Most people count the passengers and guess the bags. It works the other way round: the bags decide the car far more often than the people do.

What counts as one bag?

A bag in the table is a full-size checked case. US airlines cap those at 62 inches when you add length, width and height together, and 50 pounds; a carry-on is limited to 22 by 14 by 9 inches, according to Delta’s baggage rules. Two carry-ons take roughly the space of one big case. When you ask for a quote, list checked cases and carry-ons separately. That single detail is what tips a booking from a sedan to an SUV.

How much trunk space do the sedans really have?

Less than the badge suggests, and the most expensive car has the smallest trunk. These are the official luggage volumes for the reference models in each sedan class.

Chrysler 300 (2023)16.3 cu ftStellantis 2023 specifications
Cadillac XTS (2019)18 cu ftEPA, fueleconomy.gov

That is why the S-Class is rated for two bags while the other sedans take three. It is built around the rear seat, not the trunk. Book it for a VIP guest, a wedding couple or an executive travelling light, and book an SUV for anyone with a week of luggage.

When is a sedan the right choice?

For one to three people with light luggage: business travel, a dinner, a solo airport run. The luxury sedan suits client pickups, where a quiet cabin and a clean arrival matter more than space. The economy sedan, a Chrysler 300 or similar, does the same job for less when the occasion is practical rather than formal.

When should you book an SUV?

For families, checked bags, golf clubs, strollers or cruise luggage, and for weddings and VIP arrivals. If you are anywhere near a sedan’s limit, the SUV is the safer booking: a fourth case that will not close in a trunk is a problem at the curb, not one you can fix on the road. Both SUV classes seat six with six bags; the luxury SUV, a GMC Yukon or similar, is the one for arrivals that should look the part.

When do you need the van?

For groups of seven to 14, wedding guests or a team. Ford sells the Transit passenger van in 12 and 15 passenger layouts, per Ford’s Transit Passenger Van page; ours carries up to 14 passengers and 15 bags with a professional chauffeur at the wheel. One van keeps a group together, arrives once and saves the convoy of three cars that never park in the same place.

Does the trip length matter?

Yes. For long runs, such as JFK or Dulles, two hours or more in the car, the extra room of an SUV is worth it for most families even when a sedan would technically fit. Newark Liberty is about 83 road miles from City Hall; that is a long time with a case on your lap.

Frequently asked questions

Can an SUV fit golf clubs?

Usually yes; tell us the number of bags and clubs when you book.

Why does the S-Class take fewer bags than other sedans?

Its trunk is smaller: 13 cubic feet against 16.3 for a Chrysler 300 and 18 for a Cadillac XTS, per official figures.

What size is one bag?

A full-size checked case, up to 62 inches in length plus width plus height. Two carry-ons take about the space of one.

Is the luxury sedan bigger than the economy sedan?

Both seat three with three bags; the luxury class is the more refined car.

Do you have vehicles larger than the van?

No. The passenger van, for 14, is the largest.

Can I request a specific model?

Vehicles are booked by class, except the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which you can book by name; ask our team if another model matters to you.
