How to Get From PHL to Center City Philadelphia: Every Option Compared

The cheapest way from PHL to Center City is the SEPTA Airport Line at $8.75 with a SEPTA Key or a contactless card, and the simplest door to door option is a taxi at the $32 flat rate. Philadelphia International Airport sits about 7 miles from Center City, so every option is short. What changes is the price, the wait and how much you have to carry.

Here is how each one actually works when you land, where to find it at the airport, and which one we would pick for different trips.

What are the ways to get from PHL to Center City?

There are four practical ways from PHL to Center City Philadelphia: the SEPTA Airport Line train, a taxi at the flat rate, an Uber or Lyft, and a car you booked ahead. Each one picks you up in a different spot, so it helps to know which before you reach baggage claim.

Fares and pickup zones are from SEPTA and Philadelphia International Airport. Check them again before you fly, because transit fares change. For terminals and the trip back to the airport, see our PHL airport guide.

How does the SEPTA Airport Line work?

The SEPTA Airport Line is a regional rail train with stops at every PHL terminal that reaches 30th Street Station in about 20 minutes, with trains roughly every 30 minutes from about 5 in the morning until just after midnight. It is the cheapest way into the city by a wide margin.

The airport stations are Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminals C and D, and Terminals E and F. In Center City the train stops at William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, Suburban Station and Jefferson Station. On the schedule that took effect July 5, 2026, the first weekday train leaves Terminals E and F at 5:07 a.m. and the last at 12:07 a.m. (SEPTA Airport Line schedule).

Pay before you board. SEPTA lists the Center City fare at $8.75 with a SEPTA Key card, a contactless bank card or a Quick Trip ticket, and $11.00 if you buy on the train. The same fare applies in the other direction, from Center City to the airport.

The train is a great deal for one person with a carry on. It gets harder with two big suitcases, a stroller or a hotel that is a long walk from the station. Suburban and Jefferson are in the middle of Center City, but plenty of hotels and homes are not.

How much is a taxi from PHL to Center City?

A taxi from PHL to Center City costs a flat $32 for one passenger, plus $1 for each additional passenger, as long as your destination is inside the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s flat rate zone. The rate has been in effect since February 6, 2023.

The flat rate zone covers the area between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers, from Washington Avenue in the south to Fairmount Avenue in the north. West of the Schuylkill it follows 30th Street, Market Street, 48th Street and Spruce Street to South Street, which takes in much of University City. Outside that zone the meter applies.

Taxis wait at Zone 5 on the S. Commercial Roadway outside baggage claim (PHL). For two or three people the flat rate is often the best value, because $32 plus a dollar or two covers everyone and the bags ride in the trunk.

Where do you catch an Uber or Lyft at PHL?

Uber and Lyft pickups at Philadelphia International Airport are in Zone 7 on S. Commercial Road, outside each baggage claim. Collect your bags first, then follow the Ground Transportation signs for Ride App and Zone 7.

The airport is clear on one point: unless you arranged for a driver to meet you inside baggage claim, do not accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the terminal, or from a driver outside the marked zones (PHL rideshare guidance). Your app shows the driver, the car and the plate, so match all three before you get in.

App prices change with demand. After a cluster of evening arrivals, or on a holiday weekend, a rideshare can cost more than the taxi flat rate for the same trip. Check both before you choose.

What is a pre booked car, and where do you meet it?

A pre booked car is a sedan, SUV or van you reserve before the flight, with the price agreed in advance and a chauffeur who tracks the flight. At PHL, sedan, limousine and van services use Zone 6 on the Commercial Transportation Roadway, and with meet and greet the chauffeur waits for you inside baggage claim.

The difference shows up when things go wrong. If the flight lands an hour late, the pickup moves with it. If you are traveling with a family, child seats can be in the car before you arrive. If there are five of you and eight bags, one SUV or van takes everything in a single trip instead of two taxis.

It costs more than the train or a taxi for a solo traveler. For a group splitting one booked car, the gap is smaller than most people expect.

Which option should you choose?

Pick by how many people you are, how much you are carrying and what time you land. These are the rules we would use ourselves.

  • One person, a carry on, staying near Suburban, Jefferson or 30th Street: take the train. Nothing beats $8.75.
  • Two or three people heading into Center City or University City: take a taxi. The flat rate is predictable and the bags go in the trunk.
  • Landing after midnight: the last train leaves the airport just after midnight, so plan on a taxi, a rideshare or a booked car.
  • Four or more people, lots of luggage or young children: book a car or van ahead, so everyone travels together with the right seats.
  • A business arrival where the time matters: book ahead. A tracked flight and a chauffeur already waiting at baggage claim remove the one variable you cannot control.
